The Welimada Police has commenced an investigation to arrest the former Chairman of the Welimada Pradeshiya Sabha, for using harsh words and bullying two Police officers who had been engaged in handling traffic in the Keppetipola town.
A high-ranked official of the Welimada Police stated that information has been revealed that the former Chairman had fled to Colombo after this incident.
Two Police officers named Sergeant Gunaratne (39372) and Police Constable Ainkaran (102770) attached to the Welimada Police Station had been engaged in traffic handling duties in the Keppetipola town when they saw a car parked near a state bank in the town blocking the pedestrian crossing.
When the two officers had gone to the place and checked, they found that the driver was not in the car.
Due to the fact that the car had been parked blocking the pedestrian crossing, the two policemen who were engaged in traffic handling duties had displayed the Police notice on the front left of the windscreen of the car to inform the owner and got back to their work.
A few moments later, these officers had been approached by the former chairman of the Welimada Pradeshiya Sabha who had scolded the officers using harsh words regarding taking legal action against the vehicle being parked, blocking the pedestrian crossing.
The officers said that the former chairman was drunk at that time. A high-ranking Police officer said that the Chairman had insulted the Police officers saying that the vehicle in question belonged to the bank manager.
According to the police, while the former chairman was scolding the police officers, the people who were walking on the road had gathered there, and then the chairman had left the place.
Police also said that they will report the facts to court regarding this incident.
