Four arrested for alleged abduction, assault of teledrama producer

Four persons who allegedly abducted Gamini Priyantha Samarakoon, a film and teledrama producer and director as well as a script writer and abandoned him on the Welimada-Nuwara Eliya Road were arrested by officers of the Welimada Police, on Thursday together with the van they had been travelling in.

The abduction had taken place when 51-year-old Gamini Priyantha Samarakoon, a resident of Lunuatugama, Uva Paranagama was walking on the road.

He had told the Welimada Police that he had been abducted at about 2.45 p.m. and taken to the Haputale Road, and kicked and then abandoned on the main road. Gamini Priyantha Samarakoon had also told the Police that the group who had abducted him had taken a video call to Sandeep Prasanna alias Tarzan, a resident of Colombo.

Samarakoon had further stated that the person named Tarzan and Nimesh, the manager of a fuel filling station in Welimada had been angry with each other over a teledrama production.

He had also told the Police that a teledrama which had been produced by Nimesh had been rejected by several television institutions and that they were under the impression that it had been rejected due to being influenced by Samarakoon. He told Police and admitted himself to the Welimada hospital for treatment for injuries he had sustained during the beating he had undergone.

The Police said the person named Nimesh has fled and is in hiding at present.

The Welimada Police said that based on information received by the Officer-In-Charge, five persons connected to the abduction of Gamini Priyantha Samarakoon had been taken into custody by yesterday (05), together with the van they had been using. Two had been arrested in Welimada, two in Bandarawela and one in Nuwara Eliya. According to Police, these persons are engaged in seizing vehicles. They are residents of Welimada, Uva Paranagama and Guruthalawa.

During questioning these suspects had mentioned that they had carried out the abduction based on a contract given by the manager of the fuel filling station. He had told these suspects that he wanted to teach Gamini Priyantha Samarakoon a lesson since he had tried to approach his wife in an unseemly manner and that he should be beaten. They had told the Police that accordingly they had accepted the contract.

The Welimada Police are conducting further investigations to take into custody the two persons named Tarzan and Nimesh who are alleged to have been involved in the abduction and beating.
