0 3

Financial frauds amounting to over Rs.70 Mn that have taken place in the past five years in the Central Provincial Council’s (CPC) Health and Education Ministries and the Kandy Municipal Council four persons including a management assistant have been interdicted.

Although these four officials have been interdicted, no action has been taken against the administrative officers who were in charge of supervising their work for not fulfilling their responsibilities properly. Some of these officers are now close to retirement.

It has been revealed in the audit that several factors such as the weaknesses in the internal administration of the related institutions and failure to properly maintain books and accounts have contributed to the delay in discovering these frauds.

Central Province Governor, Lalith U.Gamage initiated an investigation into these frauds under the direction of the Provincial Chief Secretary, and only a management assistant, two development officers and an officer who were directly involved in these frauds have been interdicted.

Investigations have revealed that related frauds have been going on for about five years.

Audit Departments have shown that some Government officials have had the opportunity to steal such a large amount of money over the years because the administrative officers who were in charge of their work did not fulfill their responsibilities properly.
