Chennai: Sleuths of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Wednesday seized 11 kg of gold, worth Rs.6.6 crore, from eight male passengers who arrived in Chennai from Sri Lanka in two flights.
Based on information, DRI personnel reached Chennai airport in the early hours on Wednesday and searched passengers who arrived in an Air India flight and an IndiGo flight which landed in a span of a few minutes.
They secured four passengers from each flight on suspicion. During interrogation, they admitted to having hidden gold in their rectums. Gold in paste form was extracted.
The total seizure weighed 11 kg.DRI sleuths suspect that the origin of the gold must be Dubai and the smuggling syndicate must have attempted to smuggle the precious yellow metal into the country via Sri Lanka.
