Four Kandy products to coach club rugby teams

For the inter club league rugby competition 2023/24 four top Kandy school products are in the hot seat in coaching. Nilfer Ibrahim will continue to coach Police, Saliya Kumara Havelock SC. Fazil Marija Kandy SC and Nihal“Viper “ Gunaratne comes in as the new Navy coach. All four learnt their rugby in Kandy and became top players and coaches are sure to give their best.

Nilfer Ibrahim a product of Kingswood College,will continue his coaching with Police. He is a former Kingswood College, Kandy SC and Navy player Nilfer Ibrahim has good experience in playing and coaching, he has coached St. Joseph’s , Dharmaraja Trinity ,Isipathana and Sri Lanka Under-19 team – was the head of the coaching unit for the Under-20 Asian Sevens 2018.

He guided Dharmaraja, Trinity, Isipathana and St.Joseph’s to many trophy wins. So, his continuation of coaching with the Police in the forthcoming 2023/24 inter-club league season will help the Cops.

Saliya Kumara who learnt his rugby at Vidyartha College and later played for Trinity College will continue his coaching with Havelock SC; he was the Head Coach for the Women’s squad for the Asian Rugby Sevens in 2021.

He is a hard-working rugby coach. Saliya started his rugby with Vidyartha under 13 from there to under 15, 17 and from 2000 to 2002 under19 team as a back division player. In2003 he joined Trinity and gave his best that year.

Then at club level he first played for Havelock SC from there he crossed over to CH & FC. In 2007 he decided to settle down in his home town and joined Kandy Sports Club and played for the country. In 2003, he toured Hong Kong with the Sri Lanka Youth team and from 2006 he was a regular for the Sri Lanka Sevens and fifteen a side teams.Saliya captained Kandy in 2012 and under his captaincy they ended up being league champions. After hanging up his boots in 2015 he started coaching Vidyarthaand at one time Kandy Sports Clubs assistant coach. He also helped Trinity in coaching.

Fazil Marija full-time Kandy Sports Club rugby coach will continue his good work in the coming season too. Fazil former national rugby player has given his best and guided the team to win the league, knock outs and sevens.

He mastered his rugby skills at Kingswood College under his cousin Ronny Ibrahim’s guidance. Fazil represented his school teams from Under13 to Under20. He played for 1st XV in 2003 as a fly half, and went on to play well and helped the team emerge unbeaten triple champions in 2004 As the captain of Kingswood 1st XV,he became the best Schoolboy player in the Singer International 7’s tournament and also in the Golden Key Schools 7’s tournament, in which Kingswood won both Championships under his captaincy.He captained Kandy SC in 2010 and 2015 as well as the Sri Lanka team.He retired after the 2018 Clifford Cup knockouts and took to coaching due to the encouragement given by South African Johan Taylor a top notch coach. Fazil is an astute thinker having played the game at the highest level at school, club and national level. He was one of the best rugby sevens and fifteen a side player produced by Kandy and the country.

Nihal “Viper” Gunaratne, affectionately called ‘Viper’, has shown a lot of promise in rugby as a player and coach. He has years of experience in playing and coaching. He is one of the top rugby players produced by Kandy and has proved his capabilities in the last 47 years.In the coming inter club season he has taken over Navy side as coach He started his rugby at St. Anthony’s College and played from 1974 for the senior side and captained in 1975 and 1976. He also played for the Outstation Schools and Combined Schools in 1977. Straight from school he joined Kandy SC and played in 1977 and led the side in 1984. He played for the country in 1978 in the Rugby Asiad and Hong Kong Sevens.

He also played for CR & FC and Up-Country. He had been the Head of Talent identification for Sri Lanka Rugby Union for U16, 18 and U20. Then head coach of St. Anthony’s 1st XV team 2016. The Development manager for Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union 2012 to 2015.Director of Rugby St. Joseph’s 2013, Consultant Coach of S.Thomas’ 2010, Director of Rugby St. Anthony’s Kandy 2005-2008, Head Coach of Dharmaraja Kandy 1987-92, He also coached Army, CH and FC and Isipathana . He oached Sri Lanka Under 20 in 2007, Sri Lanka Youth team in 2010 and 2011,Junior Asiad Bangkok Thailand.
