Health Minister Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella told Parliament yesterday that the Government has approved the establishment of four private university medical colleges.
Hereafter, private university medical colleges will be established outside the University Grants Commission and a Cabinet paper was presented in this regard.
Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said this while answering the questions raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa regarding the health sector.
Chief Opposition Whip MP Lakshman Kiriella: The Health Minister said that four private University Medical Colleges have been approved. I would like to ask Education Minister whether is it true?
Education Minister Dr.Susil Premajayantha: The Ministry of Higher Education has not received such a request yet.
Chief Opposition Whip and MP Lakshman Kiriella: When the SAITM which was commenced during tenure of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was functioning under our Government, these MPs opposed it. You all opposed it then and going to approve it now. It is hilarious.
Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella: All the political parties have always been opposed whatever matter while in the Opposition. Let’s get right at least by now.
We are saying that private medical colleges should be excluded from UGC. A different method is needed to implement this. Therefore, we have presented a joint Cabinet paper. It would be good if everyone understands the gravity of the problem now.
