Accordingly, 54 persons have been named as respondents, including Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, New Fortress Inc, several Cabinet Ministers and Ministerial Secretaries.

The petitioners sought the Supreme Court intervention to scrap the agreement to hand over 40% of the Yugadanavi power plant to an American company (New Fortress) and to implement the agreement under a proper tender procedure after a formal study.

The petitioners claimed that their Fundamental Rights as well as the rights of the entire citizenry and their future generations guaranteed to them under Article 12(1) of the Constitution has been infringed and/or are continuing to be infringed and/or are in imminent danger of being infringed by the actions of the Respondents with regard to the Yugadanavi deal.
