Violent clashes, arson and looting erupted across France as nationwide demonstrations over rising living costs and deteriorating public services escalated, with more than 1,200 people arrested and around 150 police officers injured, according to reports.
Hundreds of thousands of people took part in demonstrations on Saturday, October 17, across cities including Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Limoges. The rallies brought together students, trade unions and supporters of the Yellow Vest movement, who voiced concerns over inflation, declining purchasing power and conditions in schools.
While many demonstrations remained peaceful, groups of masked protesters clashed with police, prompting officers to use tear gas and water cannons. Shops were looted, vehicles set on fire and public buildings targeted during the unrest.
In Limoges, a fire severely damaged the city hall, while protesters broke into Marseille’s city hall and vandalised the building. A tourism office in Lyon was also set ablaze, according to reports.
The demonstrations followed weeks of student-led protests over education funding, staffing shortages and deteriorating school facilities, which have expanded into a broader movement against economic inequality and government spending priorities.
French authorities blamed the violence on radical groups and individuals who exploited the demonstrations to engage in vandalism and looting. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu condemned the violence, while President Emmanuel Macron pledged action against those responsible for attacks on public institutions.
The unrest comes about six months before France’s next presidential election, adding to political tensions as the government faces mounting public dissatisfaction over economic pressures and public services. (Newswire)
