Friendly German Karate matches to promote tourism in SL
In a bid to promote a novel tourism marketing concept a German Karate team composed of youngsters and veterans are planning to hold a series of friendly Karate matches in Sri Lanka between the two countries and also add a touch of CSR to it.
The mentor behind this project, Ahtula Minithanthiri said that they had been visiting Sri Lanka for the past decade and always made it a point to provide sports gear and other essentials to school children. During our 2024 year visit we also stayed at Mandara Resort and Spa Weligama and with the General Manager Patmasiri Liyanage we discussed ways to woo more families to accompany team players. “This year we had around 15 members for the tour. If we could have some exhibition Karate events with rural clubs in Sri Lanka we can bring families of German players to join this tour.”
He also said that this year the team stayed around two weeks travelling to various parts of Sri Lanka and distributed sports gear to many schools. “He also thanks Mandara Resort and Spa for excellent hospitality and recommends it for many large groups as well.”
With many local and foreign Karate awards to his credit while representing Sri Lanka he then migrated to Germany and founded the club around 20 years ago in pavilhao municipal area with one German student and today they have over 300 students with several satellite schools in many parts of Germany and several other countries. Some of his students have also represented Germany in many international events and his success was also telecasted in several BBC programs.
He said that teaching Karate is not only a sport in Germany but it also helps to build character and discipline in a person. “This is why we have many followers.”
