Galle Prison inmate dies of Meningitis
One of the inmates of the Galle Prison has died due to Meningitis (brain fever) while receiving treatment at the Karapitiya Hospital.
Prisons Health Services Director Dr. Hemantha Ranasinghe stated that the 26-year-old prison inmate who was admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital succumbed to Meningitis on Saturday (13).
Dr. Ranasinghe further said that three more inmates of the Galle Prison who are also showing symptoms of Meningitis have been admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital and are currently undergoing treatment.
Dr. Ranasinghe stated that immediate steps have been taken to curb and contain the outbreak of Meningitis among the Galle Prison inmates and that investigations are ongoing to ascertain how the disease originated inside the prison and the extent to which the outbreak has spread among the inmates.
The Prison spokesperson said that all operations at the Galle Prison have been restricted for a week following confirmation that one of the inmates died of meningitis.
