Galle Sergeant who defrauded reward money arrested
A Police Sergeant attached to the Galle Police was arrested yesterday (22) by the Galle Division Criminal Investigation Bureau, for fraudulently obtaining reward money over Rs.700,000 allocated to officers for fighting crime and corruption. This Sergeant named K. Jayawardena (26244) committed this fraud while working as the payment officer of the control section of the Galle police station.
A Galle Division SSP said that the suspect had cashed a cheque for Rs.728,150 issued by the Galle SSP on April 6 to give the police officers reward money without issuing a cash receipt and without entering the information regarding the check in the cash book.
He also mentioned that the officer was arrested because he committed an offence under the Public Property Act by using the public money for his personal use.
This officer was to be produced before the Galle Magistrate Court. Galle SSP Upul Seneviratne has taken steps to suspend him.
