Galle ‘Wari Saubhagya’ projects nearing completion

Most of the projects carried out by the Galle office of the Agrarian Development Department under the ‘Wari Saubhagya’ (Irrigation Prosperity) programme are in the final stages, it was disclosed at the recent Galle District Coordinating Committee meeting.

The main objective of the ‘Wari Saubhagya’ programme launched in line with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’ policy framework, is to renovate existing reservoirs and anicuts in the district through scientific methods to retain more water.

Under the ‘Wari Saubhagya’ programme, 138 irrigation projects are expected to be implemented in the Galle district. The Department of Agrarian Development has prepared 28 project proposals for the district.

Of the projects that were implemented by the Agrarian Development Department, work on 11 has been completed. All other projects are nearing completion, including four projects with over 80 percent progress and two projects with 50 percent to 70 percent progress. These projects are being carried out for 350 beneficiaries at a cost of Rs. 17.7 million.

Accordingly four projects in Gonapinuwala, three in Ambalangoda, two in Hikkaduwa and Neluwa, two in Balapitiya and one in Karandeniya Divisional Secretariat divisions have been initiated.

Balapitiya Gini Gal Manana Anicut, Kadawala Kanda Anicut, Thawalama Ata Govipala Anicut, Thalgahagoda Nagoda Ninda Mulla Anicut, Neluwa Athuregedara Yaya Anicut, Ambalangoda Dorala Anicut, Gonapinuwala Paluwila Anicut and Gahalakoladeniya Yaya Ela have been renovated under the project.

The DCC meeting was held online under the patronage of Co-Chairpersons Southern Province Governor Willie Gamage and Galle District M.P. Sampath Athukorala with the participation of Minister Ramesh Pathirana and Galle District Secretary Shantha Weerasinghe.
