0 72

A man waiting in a fuel queue in Colombo had a miraculous escape yesterday when a galvanized pipe fell from the top floor of a building being constructed nearby on his car and pierced its window on the driver’s side and embedded in the floor between his legs.

The pipe had fallen from a height of about 60 to 70 feet and pierced the windshield near the steering wheel.

The driver was in the car at the time of the accident and the galvanized pipe pierced the glass and came to rest in the car floor between his legs.

Eyewitnesses of the accident said that if there was a slight change in the trajectory of the falling pipe, the life of the driver could have been in danger. The owner of the car, a resident of Galle said, “I was waiting to pump fuel for my car at the filling station at Town Hall. I was inside the vehicle. I actually was having a nap and something suddenly fell between my legs. I did not feel what happened”.

The driver has also lodged a complaint with the Kuruduwatta Police regarding this accident. According to the investigation, it has been found that the galvanized pipe fell due to a mistake by an employee who was working on the upper floor. Police say that the authorities of the construction company have also accepted this and expressed their willingness to provide compensation for the damage caused to the car. The owner of the car had accepted offer and had withdrawn his complaint.
