Gampaha district overall champions at 33rd NYSF

Gampaha district athletes clinched the overall champion title for the seventh consecutive year with 170 points at the 33rd National Youth Sports Festival (NYSF) conducted by the Ministry of Sports, National Youth Services Council and Sri Lanka Federation of Youth Clubs from December 19 to 22 at the Sugathadasa International Stadium.
Colombo and Kandy district became second and third places with 102 and 93 points respectively.
Around 3,000 athletes from across the island took part in the Sports Festival and athletes established 11 new meet records at the four-day event. Two new meet records were set up on the final day by Puttalam district under 20 boys 4x100m relay team clocking 42.25 seconds and Gampaha district under 20 girls 4x400m relay team with a timing of 3:50.56 minutes.
Sayuri Lakshima Mendis of Gampaha district was crowned as the Best Athlete with a new meet record (56.00 seconds) in 400 meter under 20 girl’s event. New meet record holder in 110 meter hurdles event S.K. Dias of Kurunegala district obtained the Best Athlete award in the under 20 boys’ category.
E.K. Madushani of Kurunegala district became Best Athlete in over 20 women’s category by clocking 1:00.44 minutes in 400-meter hurdle event while P.B. Herath of Kandy district obtained the Best Athlete award in men’s over 20 long jump event with a 7.52-meter distance.
The overall champion Gampaha district rewarded Rs. 150,000 cash prize with a champion trophy while Colombo and Kandy districts received Rs. 100,000 and a runner-up award and Rs. 75,000 cash prize respectively. Also the Best Athlete in over and under 20 category both men and women awarded Rs. 250,000 cash prize and a trophy each.
The National Youth Sports Festival is the main event for finding out talented players who are capable of bringing glory to the Motherland. The Sports Festival boasts for the huge contribution to uplift the sports, said Minister of Youth and Sports Namal Rajapaksa.
