Gampaha Principal remanded on bribery charge

The principal of a leading school in Gampaha, who was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption while accepting  a bribe of Rs.200,000 has been remanded till January 11 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika Ragala yesterday.

When the matter was taken up before court, Bribery officials informed the Magistrate that the principal had obtained Rs.200,000 from a parent to admit the child to school.

The suspect was arrested at the principals’ office while soliciting and accepting the said bribe to enroll the complainants’ child to Grade 7 to study in the English medium at Thakshila Vidyalaya, Gampaha in 2022.

Attorney Sanjaya Gamage appearing on behalf of the suspect informed the Magistrate that the investigation was based on a false complaint. The officials further stated that further investigations are underway.
