Gang robs over Rs. 10 Mn in cash and gold from businessman’s house

Four armed robbers who broke into a businessman’s house at Heegoda, Urubokka on Sunday (11) locked the householders in a room and had stolen more than Rs.10 million in cash and gold items.  

This robber gang had arrived in a motor car which was later found abandoned.

The car had been registered under the name of the wife of a Police officer attached to the Walasmulla Police Station. Police said that the Police officer’s wife used to rent out the vehicle to people. During investigations it was revealed that an individual from Middeniya had hired the vehicle on June 9.

According to Police, the individual who had hired the vehicle on rent is also accused of money fraud. The Tangalle Division Fraud Investigation Unit had conducted several investigations into his activities and taken him into custody on a number of occasions and even produced him in court, a top-ranked police officer said.

He also said that after carrying out the heist, the suspect had fled and was in hiding. Officers of the Urubokka Police Station had identified the colour and number of the vehicle in which the robbers had arrived during investigations through security camera footage.

These officers had alerted all Police stations about the number and colour of the vehicle. A constable attached to the Walasmulla Police had subsequently identified that it was the vehicle registered under his wife’s name. He had informed the Police and handed over the vehicle to the Police for investigations. Fingerprints from the vehicle were obtained by fingerprint officers yesterday (12) and crime scene laboratory officers had found some bio samples of the suspects from inside the car as well.

Police said these robbers had broken into the businessman’s house and stolen Rs.9,850,000 in cash and gold jewellery to the value of Rs.325,000 together with three mobile phones worth Rs.17,000.

The businessman had not been at home at the time of the robbery and had been at a building materials sales outlet in Urubokka, belonging to him. In addition to this sales outlet, he has a tile shop and a glass shop as well, according to Police.

The Police further said that the businessman’s son, who had tried to repair a smoke window of the house on the top floor had fallen from there and sustained head injuries and he is more or less bedridden. The money stolen, based on what the Police said, had been collected for a surgery to the son’s head.
