Germany’s Grune Schule Grenzenlos develops Meegasthanna village
Germany’s Grune Schule Grenzenlos organisation has come forward to support the people of Meegasthanna village, who are trying to rise up collectively.
Accordingly, the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council, German Grune Schule Grenzenlos and the Sinhala Organisation of Germany are jointly implementing an agriculture and educational project at Meegasthanna village, Deraniyagala, in the Kegalle district.
The distribution of agricultural equipment to the villagers under the project took place at Sri Mahindarama Temple in Meegasthana on Saturday (16) with the participation of Sabaragamuwa Province Chief Secretary Mahinda S. Weerasuriya and Chairman of Germany’s Grune Schule Gvenzenlos organisation Chistoph Weidensdorfer Geschafuhrer.
Around Rs. 25 million has been utilised so far for the agriculture and educational projects, centered on Megasthanna village. In 2022, Chief Secretary Weerasuriya, who was the Kegalle District Governor at that time, took the initiative to start this development project. Under it, many projects are underway including infrastructure development, such as the development of the road system that accesses this village, the starting of the Megasthanna collective farm, uplifting pre-school education, and so on.
Some 130 families have joined the series of projects in Megasthanna village and accordingly, an organic cultivation project is also underway in their gardens. Apart from this, the self-employment sector centered on women, including beekeeping, food dehydration, and mushroom production has also been added to this project.
This project has also provided the opportunity for children studying higher education in this village to study at the Grune Schule Gvenzenlos academy in Germany.
Former Deputy Chief Secretary Parakrama Piyasena, Provincial Agriculture Director Aruni Rajapakse and Assistant Director Nilanthi Wijesinghe were also present.
