Getting fair price for harvest –Farmers of Embilipitiya
The farmers of the Embilipitiya Walawa zone stressed that there is no hindrance in the sale of green gram crops and therefore they are getting a fair price for their harvest.
Recently, some media had reported that the farmers of Embilipitiya Walawa zone are in a very difficult situation as they are unable to sell their green gram harvest and they are not getting proper price for the harvest. However, the cultivators refused these media reports and stressed that they have no issue in selling their green gram harvest whatsoever.
This is revealed at a discussion held with the participation of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Governor Champa Janaki Rajaratne recently at the Embilipitiya AGA office.
The representatives of the farming societies, who spoke there, said that they do not have the green gram harvest at a level that cannot be sold. This time, a greater amount of the green gram harvest they had, has already been sold. The remaining green gram harvest will be used for their own consumption and for cultivation as seeds.
Officials of the Mahaweli Authority who spoke there said that the farmers of Embilipitiya left bank zone cultivated 93 hectares of green gram as an interim season crop this year. Accordingly, the farmers of this zone have only about 1,400 kg of harvest.
The Governor said that the government is working to protect farmers and further said that the government will provide water, fertilizer, seeds and storage facilities for the farmers. Besides, the government will intervene in the sale of the crops of farmers when needed.
Embilipitiya Divisional Secretary Vishaka Pubuduni Peter, officials of Mahaweli Authority were also present on this occasion.
