The protest by a group of Buddhist monks outside the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, demanding the release of Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, has ended.
According to reports, the monks have removed the temporary shelters erected at the protest site in compliance with a court order issued today (16), and moved away from the site.
The move follows an order issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena this morning, prohibiting Ven. Ulapane Sumangala Thera and 54 others from remaining within the premises of the Presidential Secretariat.
The protesting monks reportedly removed the temporary structures in respect of the court order.
The protest began on Thursday (15) evening, with a group of Buddhist monks gathering outside the Presidential Secretariat to demand the release of the imprisoned Gnanasara Thera.
Several monks remained at the location overnight, continuing their protest into Friday (16).
The protesters had been occupying the pavement on the opposite side of Galle Road, away from the Presidential Secretariat.
The removal of the temporary shelters followed the court’s intervention as the monks continued their demonstration demanding Gnanasara Thera’s release. (Newswire)
