Gold medalist Tharushi felicitated in China

A ceremony was held yesterday in Hangzhou, China to felicitate gold medalist Tharushi Karunaratne and the Sri Lanka team. This was organized under the China-Sri Lanka Youth Cultural and Sports Exchange Programme, where Tharushi and other athletes joined a group of school children in Hanjo for several activities.

Meanwhile, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe met the Sri Lankan sportsmen and women in Hanjo yesterday, and congratulated the team that won medals including Tharushi, he also engaged in a friendly conversation with them. He wished all the athletes for their display and said that after going to Sri Lanka, the Ministry of Sports will do their best for the benefit of the athletes.

The General Secretary of the National Olympic Committee Maxwell de Silva, Vice President Suranjith Premadasa and the head of the Sri Lankan team Nishantha Piyasena were also present on this occasion.

India and Afghanistan will compete for the gold medal in the men’s event of this year’s cricket tournament this afternoon. India entered this match by winning the first semi-final by 9 wickets, while Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by 4 wickets in the second semi-final. This is the third time that cricket was played at the Asian Games and India is taking part for the first time. Afghanistan, who qualified for the final, won the silver medal on the last two occasions (2010 and 2014).

The bronze medal match will be played between Pakistan and Bangladesh this morning. Dineth Avihinsa, who is the last competitor representing Sri Lanka in this year’s Asian Games, is going to enter the Round of 16 competition today in the 67 kg weight class of the Karate Committee. The closing ceremony will be held tomorrow (8), and Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang will be the chief guest.

Meanwhile, China, which is at the forefront of the medal table, had won 185 gold medals as of yesterday afternoon, while Japan had won 44 gold medals and South Korea had won 36 gold medals. India finished fourth with 21 gold medals while Sri Lanka finished in 25th position with 5 medals including one gold.
