“Govt has no heart for plight of farmers”
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said the satyagraha started by the farmers of Embilipitiya to demand water for the crops that are being irrigated is still going on, but the Government authorities have no sympathy towards their plight.
The Opposition Leader who said this by issuing a special announcement also said the following:
“The Government has still failed to irrigate about 75,000 acres of cultivated land, of which only 65,000 acres are under paddy cultivation. It is predicted that there may be a loss of Rs. 16.81 billion from paddy cultivation in the coming week due to the existing water problem.
“A serious disaster cannot be prevented due to the arbitrary decisions taken by the Government from the cold rooms, and we remind the Government to remember the results of the arbitrary decision taken by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to ban fertilizers.“At a time when the country is in a serious state of crisis, the Government as well as the whole country will have to experience irrevocable adverse results playing with the lives of the farmers who provide rice to the whole country and it is suspected that this is the result of a subtle and cunning attempt by the Government to undermine the country’s agriculture.
“We are urging the Government to release the water needed for their farming activities without further deceiving the farmers.
“The Government is always doing anti-people activities, not populist activities. It should also be emphasised that the day when the adverse results of these activities will boomerang upon the Government is not far away.”
