Govt. hunting down protesters – Herath

0 92

Instead of finding solutions to the economic crisis, the new Government is hunting down the protesters who demand political and economic solutions to the country’s prevailing crisis, National People’s Power (NPP) MP Vijitha Herath said yesterday (29).

MP Herath made this observation at a press brief held in Colombo yesterday (29). “The Government should immediately put a stop to this subjugation,” MP Herath urged.

“Inflation has gone up to 60%. The country has failed to meet foreign debts and Treasury Bond payments. The fuel crisis, fertilizer shortage, gas shortage, medicine shortage and other such difficulties have not been addressed. Education has completely collapsed. Children go to school only for three days. Online learning is not successful. So with all these issues pressing them down, people took to the streets. Galle Face ‘Aragalaya’ was a symbol of this island wide protest. Government goons attacked the Galle Face protestors on May 9. It was state terrorism. Culprits of this attack were not arrested. No justice was done,” MP Herath pointed out.

“The new Government is subjugating using Emergency regulations. It is playing a mind game with the people by trying to suggest that those who participate in protests will not be allowed to go abroad, get a Police report and such. It is targeting youth leaders who were in the frontline of the struggle. Many MPs label these young protestors as terrorists. Are people in fuel queues terrorists? Are farmers terrorists?” MP Herath added.
