Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said in Parliament yesterday that the floriculture sector has been identified by the Government as a potential sector for development and promotion for exports and a strategic plan is being prepared to improve the floriculture industry towards an export industry.

The Prime Minister said this while answering a question raised by MP Sudarshana Denipitiya under the Prime Minister’s question time. He further said that he looked into this matter thoroughly during his visit to China recently. He added that China reached the third place among the world’s flower exporters within a very short time. The Government is also ready to release land for cultivating flowers for export and facilitating the private sector to export flowers.

“We are ready to transform the highlands, especially Badulla, Kandy, Ratnapura, etc. into feasible areas for the industry. We are also ready to release land for this process,” the Premier said.
