Medical Supplies Division Director Dr. Kapila Wickremanayake said yesterday (25) that even if all the drugs which are substandard are destroyed and removed from use, there will be no loss to the Government. He also stated that, in addition to the value of all drugs that are removed from use, a fine of 25 percent is also imposed on the company which imported the drug.
He further said that a 25 percent fine is charged from relevant companies in order to cover the expenses of the Medical Supplies Division which have to be incurred when destroying substandard drugs.
It is said that substandard drugs are reported annually and while the loss incurred as a result of importing these substandard drugs is recovered from the relevant pharmaceutical company, the company which imported the drug could be blacklisted.
