Govt to extend full support to CBSL

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that the Government will extend its full support to carry out the Central Bank and the Monetary Board functions independently sans any political influence.

Rajapaksa gave this assurance last Saturday when he had a meeting with CBSL Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe and Monetary Board member Sanjeeva Jayawardena PC at the President’s House in Colombo Fort this morning (28). The President said at the meeting that he was ready to intervene as the Heads of State whenever necessary for the success of the ongoing discussions. The President also lauded the prudent actions taken by Governor Dr Weerasinghe to control and alleviate the financial crisis within a short period. The CBSL Governor explained in detail that programs that are carried out in consultation with the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and other financial institutions with the contribution of experts in the field of economics have made successful progress.

The Governor also emphasized the action plan taken to control inflation and strengthen the economy and also briefed the President on the numerous, multi-pronged measures put in place by the Governor, The Governor thanked the President for reposing his confidence and for the assurance of full independence and autonomy minus any political interference.
