Green Biotechnology for Green revolution in Agriculture
“Green revolution in Agriculture has given light to Green Biotechnology in Agriculture era, and we must jump on the bandwagon, as we envision a brighter and more environmentally conscious future for Sri Lanka’s Agricultural landscape. With the payoff-line ‘Back to Basics-But Better’, Sara Bhumi Lanka Bio-products (Pvt) Ltd (SBLBPL) is pioneering to develop eco-friendly bio-based products to tackle Agricultural challenges in Sri Lanka.
Our Research and Development efforts has led to the successful incorporation of Effective Microorganisms (EM) into our bio-fertilisers. The integration of EM has proven to significantly boost soil fertility, while offering protection against various harmful diseases.
Revived agro-fields in the country and positive responses from agriculturalists are testament”, said SBLBPL Chief Advisor Dr Lanka Undugoda, at a press conference to announce the services provided by the SBLBPL’s newest state-of-the-art research, development and training facility in Pitipana, Homagama, which was opened on August 10.
“With the revamping of the laboratory complex, we aim to offer robust eco-friendly solutions to tackle pressing challenges within the Sri Lankan food and agriculture sector, and would collaborate with Sri Lanka’s universities, industries, agro-based institutions and banks fostering a collective effort to enhance knowledge and contribute to the nation’s development”, she added.
“The four ‘B’s associated with our venture speaks for itself. We produce microbial inoculants for agriculture. We improve soil and crop yield via natural, science-based methods. With microbial inoculants and rapid composting methods, we have developed bio-fertilisers, bio-control formulations for agriculture and waste management.
All our products are 100 per cent organic. Improper agricultural practices can lead to decline in the healthy microbial community in the soil. Our solution to boost soil health is the application of bio-fertilisers. We have successfully integrated EM into our bio-fertilisers”, said SBLBPL Managing Director Chaminda Abeygunasekara.
“According to a survey conducted by the WHO, it was revealed that Sri Lankans consume the most toxic food in the world. Hence, we need to focus on healthy food production and promote healthy eating patterns to build energetic Sri Lankans”, he stressed.
SBLBPL was commissioned in 2012, as an all-encompassing solution provider for diverse agricultural and environmental concerns. It has constantly researched and developed on microbial inoculants that could help increase crop yield, protect plants against pests and diseases, while reducing the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides.
