0 17

Retired doctor Shirley Herath and two others have been further remanded until March 14 in connection with the detection of a hand grenade from All Saints Church in Borella.

When the matter was taken up before the Magistrate, State Counsel Hansa Abeyrathne appearing on behalf of the Colombo Crimes Division informed the Magistrate that further investigations against the suspects would not be conducted under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

He also pointed out that Colombo Crimes Division had already obtained an order from the court to inspect the phone records of the suspects.

Hence, a probe is currently being conducted into it.

State Counsel then urged the Magistrate to further remand the suspect, as investigations were continuing.

Attorney-at-Law Chaminda Athukorala appearing on behalf of the suspect told the Magistrate that the prosecution has failed to provide any evidence against my client. The Counsel further pleaded to release his client.

Having considered the submissions and as the probe into the case has still not been concluded, the Magistrate rejected the request made by the defense counsel and ordered them to be remanded till the aforesaid date.

The Magistrate then issued an order directing the Prison Authority to take necessary measures accordingly having looked into the suspect’s illness.

On February 2, the Colombo Additional Magistrate ordered the release of a church worker and two others who were arrested on suspicion over the hand grenade found inside the church.
