Half of university lecturers’ vacancies to be filled in October
Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha told Parliament yesterday that steps will be taken to fill 50 percent of the shortage of lecturers in the state university system within the next month.
The Minister said that there is a shortage of 1,054 lectures in the 17 state universities and action has been taken to fill the vacancies in the respective universities as per the instructions of the University Grants Commission.
The Minister said this while replying to the question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa under Standing Order 27(2).
He said that there is a tendency for university lecturers to leave the country if an opportunity arises and the vacancies will be filled to replace the lecturers who retire and resign.
The Minister also stated that steps will be taken to reappoint lecturers who retired and resigned in 2022 and 2023.
