The country should be handed over to former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe without further delay as it is proved that he is the only leader who can alleviate the suffering of thousands of people under the present regime, UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena said.
In his address he recalled that when the UNP government came to power in 2015, the prices of essential commodities including fuel and gas had skyrocketed and the lives of the people had collapsed,
but in a very short period of time we took action to reduce the prices of those commodities and increase the income of the people and build the country.
Abeywardena expressed these views at a media conference held in Galle yesterday (16).
Last Saturday and Sunday we launched the UNP Member Promotion Programme in the Colombo District. I would like to state that it was a huge success. In those two days more than 80,000 new persons joined the UNP, Abeywardena said.
Many more are prepared to join the UNP. More people are rallying around the UNP today than ever before. People have started talking about the UNP and its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today. People say that if Ranil Wickremesinghe had ruled the country today we would not have to suffer. People say that if he was in power the country would not have been plunged into such a catastrophe. The people are of the opinion that he is the leader who has the right vision and the right programme to rebuild the country. Everywhere we went when the membership promotion programme was implemented; the only demand of the people was to bring Ranil Wickremesinghe to power somehow. The people demanded that the country be handed over to Ranil Wickremesinghe immediately, he said.
A joker cannot recover from a collapsing economy. Those who do not have an understanding, a vision, a plan cannot do that. Today the whole country has to pay compensation for doing so. The whole country has been devastated. However looking at the way this country is being destroyed day by day today proves that they have no solution, Abeywardena said.
“That is why we demand that the country be handed over to Ranil Wickremesinghe. We are confident that if the country is handed over to him, steps will be taken to rebuild the country in a very short period of time,” he argued.
