An attempt by Nadun Chinthaka, alias ‘Harak Kata’, to escape from custody with the help of a constable of the Criminal Investigation Department was foiled by other CID officials yesterday. Investigations have revealed that the constable involved in this plan did not lock the handcuffs when Harak Kata was taken out of the cell on Sunday afternoon to record a statement.
Internal Police sources revealed that taking advantage of the situation, Harak Kata tried to grab the T-56 rifle of a Sub-Inspector while he was being taken for questioning.
Sources revealed that the sub-inspector was holding the firearm tightly and Harak Kata was unable to take it away and he wrestled with the Sub-Inspector to grab the firearm.
Police information revealed that the constable who deliberately did not lock the handcuffs of Harak Kata had fled while the fight was taking place between the underworld criminal and the SI. A high-ranking Police officer said that it appears that Harak Kata’s escape bid was clearly supported by the constable.
It has been found in the investigation that the constable who is on the run had also obtained his passport recently. So far, no information has been found to the fact that he has fled the country.
The senior officer also said that it appears that Harak Kata had offered him a large sum of money to help him escape.
It is said that this constable from Polonnaruwa had given his fellow officers milk toffee that day saying he had brought them from home.
It is alleged that the officers who ate the toffee got intoxicated. But the internal information of the CID does not confirm this information.
Meanwhile, CID yesterday evening detained Constable’s WPC girlfriend.
The two criminals Harak Kata and Panadure Kudu Salindu are taken out of the cell daily for exercise and they are allowed to walk up and down the stairs of the CID building.
Once when they were taken out of the cell and taken back inside, drugs were found in their possession.
There had been rumours among fellow officers that it was this suspect constable who had given the drugs to the two of them and his behaviour in the last few days had been suspicious, sources said.
Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday gave permission to the CID to detain and question Harak Kata and Kudu Salindu who are allegedly involved in drug trafficking for a further 90 days.
The Magistrate made this order after considering the request the CID made to the Court by filing a motion.
Harak Kata and Kudu Salindu, who went to Madagascar in a private jet on February 12 posing as wealthy men, were arrested by the Madagascar Security Forces on March 1. They were arrested when they arrived at the airport to leave Madagascar.
Four officers of the CID and the Police Special Task Force (STF) left for Madagascar on March 11 and had taken Harak Kata and Kudu Salindu into their custody and were brought back to Sri Lanka.
Since their arrival they have been under the custody of the CID.
