Harindu and Sachira star in low scoring draw

A century by Harindu Jayasekara and a match bag of ten (10-65) including a seven wicket haul by right arm offie Sachira Rashmika for St Thomas were the highlights of the 122nd Battle of the Blues which ended in a low scoring draw at the Uyanwatta Stadium on Sunday evening.

Sri Lanka under 19 player Harindu Jayasekara complemented his half century in the first innings with a patient 129 in the Thomian second essay. He faced 248 balls for his 129 which included 15 boundaries and a six. Seven Servatian batsmen fell victim to Sachira Rashmika’s spin in the Servatian first innings and three in the second.

Electing to bat first in the three day encounter the Thomians were restricted to 132 which they reached in 68.1 overs. Harindu Jayasekara topped the score card with a well compiled 53 while Wiran Chamuditha, Tharusha Dhamindu and skipper Hasitha Amarasinghe shared the wickets.

In reply half centuries by Diniru Abeywickremasinghe and Kushan Wijerama saw St Servatius post 198 in their first essay. Spinner Sachira Rashmika bowled well to capture seven wickets.

Harindu single handedly guided his team to 188 in the Thomian second essay in which only three other batsmen were able to reach double figures.

Given a target of 123 runs to win in a minimum of 26 overs the Servatians were 49/5 at close of play. Sachira Rashmika captured three wickets to finish with a match bag of ten.

Only 567 runs were scored in nine full sessions of play in which 35 wickets fell. With both teams trying to safeguard their wicket rather than take on the bowlers 88 of the overs bowled were maidens. Of this 61 were accounted for by the Thomians.
