The first hat-trick in IPL was taken by Lakshmipathy Balaji for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK)in 2008 against Kings XI Punjab. The latest addition to IPL hat trick list is Royal Kolkata Bangalore’s(RCK) paceman Harshal Patel who took a hat trick against defending champion Mumbai Indians in Dubai on Sunday.
This is the first hat-trick of the season. Harshal also became the third RCB bowler to take a hat-trick in IPL, with Praveen Kumar and Samuel Badree being the first two to do so.
The moment occurred in the 17th over of MI innings, who started off well in the 166-run chase, but then kept losing wickets at regular intervals.RCB captain Virat Kholi handed the ball to Harshal in the 17th over, and in the first ball itself, he dismissed Hardik Pandya. The MI allrounder flung his bat on a slow one, but mistimed his shot, and Kohli took an easy catch.
In the next ball, Harshal tricked Kieron Pollard with another slow delivery and the West Indian had to return to the hut. Harshal completed his hat-trick by dismissing Rahul Chahar LBW in the next ball for a golden duck.
However,So far only eight fast bowlers have managed to get a hat-trick in the IPL.. Rest of the 12 hat-tricks in the competition have been taken by spinners, with highest three of them belonging to Right arm leg spinner Amith Mishra .
The inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008 saw three players bag hat-tricks. Lakshmipathy Balaji etched his name in the history books when he became the first player to get a hat-trick in the cash-rich league against Punjab Kings (PBKS).
After Delhi Capitals’ Mishra got the first of his three IPL hat-tricks against Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Makhaya Ntini also picked up a hat-trick against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The undisputed king of IPL hat-tricks, Mishra got his second in 2011 against PBKS. Then with the Chargers, Mishra’s magic with the ball helped the side thump Punjab by 82 runs.
In the colours of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2013, Mishra made headlines yet again for being the only player with three hat-tricks in the IPL.
Meanwhile PBKS’ Yuvraj bagged two hat-tricks on two separate occasions in the 2009 tournament. The first one came against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) albeit in a losing cause. His second hat-trick against the Chargers, however, helped his side across the line.
