Harshi Sewmini a talented sportswoman from Udunuwara
Twenty year old Harshi Sewmini Wickremaratne, a Grade thirteen student in the G.C.E(A/L) class in the Arts Stream of D.B. Wijetunge National School, Udunuwara is an Athlete, Cricketer and a Junior rugby player of the School.
She started her Athletic career from Grade three onwards and won the 50 and 75 Metres races representing ‘Kokila House’ at the Inter School sports meet. Again in the same year she won the 50and 75 metre races in ‘Mayura House’ too as the teachers asked her to participate in these events. She continued her winning spree
at the Grade five Class when she won the 75 and 100 metre races and Long Jump events and after a lapse of three years she was well trained to win the 800 and 1500 metre Races in School as well as District level.
While doing Athletics Harshi started Cricket in the year 2015 and she scored 40 runs and bagged three wickets for 30 runs at the School Cricket match and while playing for School she got an opportunity to play in the District Cricket Tournament and scored 25 runs against Mahamaya Girls School,Kandy and she bagged Three wickets for thirty runs against St.Anthonys’ Girls School.
In the same year she joined the Malwatte Cricket Club,Kandy under the coaching of Samantha Dikkumbura, a veteran womens’ Cricket Coach. Under his coaching she represented the Club in an Inter Club Match against Kandy Cricket and Athletic Academy team to score a match winning 50 runs with eight fours and one six. Her intention is to improve her Athletic and Cricket ability to be a National Player in future while studying to become a Lawyer.
She was involved in rugby too in school as a Junior player and represented the School at a Mini Rugby Tournament held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Biyagama in 2012 and her Rugby team became Runners-up where about fifty Rugby teams all over the Island participated She played as a Place Kicker and she wants to improve her playing in rugby too if she gets an opportunity to do so.
