Nineteen year old, K.M.Hasanga Bandara is a Grade Thirteen Student of Girls High School, Kandy who joined the school in the year 2020 from St.Anthonys’ Girls School,Katugastota to improve her higher studies as well as her talent in sports.
She did Athletics under the coaching of Sanath Gunathillake, a Veteran Athletic Coach and became the Champion Athlete in Under 11, 14,16 and Under 18 age groups. She achieved this feat competing in the Track Events such as 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1500 Metres and Long Jump as a field event. At the District Meet she was placed second in 400, 800 and 1500 Metre Races in the under 18 age category.
At the Zonal Meet she won the first place in 800 metre race in the year 2017 and in 2018 came first in 800 metre event and came second in 400 metre race. In the year 2019 she showed a vast improvement in her track events and won the first place in 800 metre and 1500 metre races and came second in 400 metre race.
Hasanga maintained her winning spree at the Provincial Meet when she was placed second in the 800 Metre race and she won the same meet in 800 Metres in 2018. At the All Island Athletic Meet she was placed fourth in the 800 Metre and in 2016 she received a Merit Certificate for 200 and 400 metre races. She was selected to the Kandy Schools 4×400 Relay team along with Amesha Hettiarachchi, Hiruni Amasha and Safiya Yamik. At school level she came first in 1500 metre race and second in 400 and 800 metre races at the Inter House Sports Meet representing Eaton House in the year 2022.
She is hoping to continue her higher studies and improve her ability in Athletics to the highest level to become an outstanding athlete in track and field events.
