Havelock SC will look to produce an improved performance when they take on Navy SC as the 2022/23 SLR Nippon Paint Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament first-round resumes at Welisara today.

The Havies are currently in third place in the league tournament points table with seven points behind the defending champions Kandy SC and Air Force SC having recorded one victory and suffered one defeat.

But the Havies had a tough time in their previous game as they struggled to beat the Airmen by the narrowest margin (36-35) in an absolute thriller at Ratmalana after their shock 21-23 defeat at the hands of the traditional rivals CR and FC in the opening match of the tournament.

The Park Club seem to be still looking for their perfect combination despite having some of the finest exponents of the game having started the season as one of the top contenders to win the league title.

In contrast, Navy SC are currently placed seventh in the league tournament points table with five points having registered one win and lost one game from their two outings so far.

The Sailors had a promising start to the new season as they defeated the favourites Police SC 15-7 in the curtain-raiser match of the tournament on their home grounds before going down to the CH and FC 20-34 in a high-scoring game at the Racecourse Grounds in Colombo.

Havelock SC, of course, ran out easy winners 21-5 in last year’s encounter played at Havelock Park but this time they will really need to get their act together well to keep their chances alive.

Havelock SC will have the advantage with more try-scoring potential in their side and they have so far planted eight tries while Navy SC have touched down only on five occasions.

Even then, Navy SC will have the home advantage and they will look to their key players, Thilina Weerasinghe, Isuru Kongahawatta, Mushin Faleel, Nirosh Perera and Dimuth Perera for another outstanding performance.

For Havelock SC, this will be another acid test and how well they cope up with the pressure and the match situation as they look to record their second successive victory in the tournament.

They will bank on their experienced players in the form of Randitha Warnapura, who has two tries to his credit in addition to the talent of Azmeer Fajudeen, Mithun Hapugoda, Shean Dias, Dinupa Senevirathna, Sandesh Jayawickrama and Iranga Ariyapala.
