0 18

Havelock Sports Club will be at full strength and raring to go when they take on the CR & FC in their SLR ‘A’ Division Inter-Club League Rugby first round match for the Commander Eustace Matthysz Trophy at CR grounds at Longden Place today, starting at 4:15 pm.

Led by young flanker Shenal Deelaka, the Havies team got some good players who could be match-winners for the Havelock Park outfit.

Players such as fly-half and playmaker Sandesh Jayawickrema, centres Nishon Perera, Theekshana Dassanayake, number eight Lasindu Karunathilake, winger Ramesh Fernando, flanker Maleesha Madumewan, scrum-half Vimukthi Rahula, and full back Mithun Hapugoda should be marked well by the CR lads, if not, they will be in deep trouble.

The Havies, one of the strongest teams at present in the SLR league championship this year, will be out for another shock win when they meet CR. The Havies coached by former Sri Lanka national coach Sanath Martis and Lakala Perera, should have things their own way in this encounter.

The Havelock outfit are unbeaten in the ongoing league tournament so far and they beat the formidable Navy SC (05-21), Army SC (36-14), CH and FC (20-17), Air Force SC (26-22) and Police (21-17) at Police Park, in a tense battle.

Playmaker Sandesh Jayawickrema’s kicking boot will play a major role in this game as well.

Meanwhile, CR & FC the dark horse of the League, will be out for an important win. They will be heavily dependent on their skipper Kavindu De Costha, playmaker cum centre Kanchana Ramanayake, the two hard-running co-centre Murshid Doray, and Winger Yasas Kavindu. CR lost four games to Air Force SC (11-19), Kandy SC (26-45), Navy SC (10-18), Police SC (6-20) and held Army outfit to a (16-16) draw and won against CH (27-22) in the ongoing inter-club league tourney.

Going by the two teams’ performances so far, this encounter should be a close tussle for supremacy with Havies holding a firm edge over the underdogs CR & FC team in this league match.
