Health Ministry updates and launches Antimicrobial drugs, National Guidelines SL – 2024
The second edition of the Empirical and Prophylactic use of Antimicrobial drugs, National Guidelines – Sri Lanka – 2024 was launched yesterday (31) in the auditorium of the Health Ministry.
The unveiling of the Guidelines was held under the patronage of Health Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala.
Micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites cause diseases in the biosphere. Antimicrobial drugs are used to suppress these harmful microbes. Among them, antibiotics are used to fight bacteria. But it is essential to use antimicrobial drugs based on correct medical strategies, and by issuing scientific guidelines for that, it can prevent them from becoming resistant to those drugs.
The main cause of antibiotic resistance is due to antibiotic over-use. When we use antibiotics, some bacteria die but resistant bacteria can survive and even multiply. The overuse of antibiotics makes resistant bacteria more commonplace.
Accordingly, taking the above facts into consideration, the Health Ministry has worked to update and release the above National guidelines.
Additional Secretaries, Deputy Director Generals and Directors of the Health Ministry including the Director General of Health Services Dr. Asela Gunawardena were present at this event.
