Health Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana recently stressed the importance of reviving the primary healthcare service, secondary health care service and tertiary healthcare service in Sri Lanka to create credibility among the people.

The Minister stated this recently while speaking to the media after an observation tour of Maharagama Apesksha Hospital to see the current situation of the hospital.

The Minister said that this country has a large human resource in the health system, and similarly there is a very good infrastructure system in the health sector, and health services are provided formally through an organized network. He also said that there are a large number of children affected by cancer in Sri Lanka and unfortunately the number is increasing. In order to save the people from communicable as well as non-communicable diseases, awareness programmes should be implemented. Sri Lanka is among the countries that provide health services from simple drugs such as Paracetamol to complex treatment such as radiation therapy, and even food and drink, without insurance. The Minister inspected the construction of the four-storied ward complex which is being built with assistance from the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Temple Fund at a cost of Rs. 150 million.

Minister Pathirana paid special attention to the current problems faced by the staff working in the hospital. He requested that the system of maintaining medicines without shortage in the hospital should be continuously done.

Hospital Director Dr. Aruna Jayasekara, Ruhunu Kataragama Temple’s Basnayake Nilame Dishan Gunasekara, Deputy Director of the Hospital, the Administrative Officer, doctors and hospital staff also participated in this event.
