Heavy bail for street activist

Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday (10)  ordered the release of a woman from Maligawatta area who was marching with the national flag in her hand making statements that would bring the government into disrepute. The woman is believed to have been involved in the Aragalaya last year and her march was to mark the first year anniversary of the struggle.

The magistrate granted bail after considering the facts presented by the lawyers who appeared for the suspect that the suspect had charges before the court for similar offences. Granting bail, the judge stated that the bail would be revoked if any court had previously warned her not to commit such offences.

The police stated before the court that around 12.30 pm on Tuesday (9) the suspect was holding a national flag in her hand and making statements defaming the government and provoking the public. Police further accused her of blocking the road from Maligawatta to Dematagoda.The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court had issued an order prohibiting demonstrations. Police told the court that although this person was informed about it, she had ignored the warning.Police said that they had received three complaints that this person was provoking the public demonstrating on the highway with another group of people.

Thisara Chamara, the lawyer who appeared for the suspect, stated that any citizen had the freedom to travel within the Sri Lankan territory, and stated that the suspect did not carry a Chinese flag but a lion flag.

Attorney Rajitha Kodithuwakku requested the court to release the suspect on bail as it was a bailable offence.

The magistrate considered the matter and released the suspect on a bail of Rs.500,000. He further ordered the suspect to report to the Maligawatta police on the last Sunday of every month.
