The Irrigation Department had informed that both the sluice gates of the Kalawewa Reservoir have been opened yesterday (15) as the heavy rainfall continued to pound the area.
Due to opening of both the spill gates of Kalawewa Reservoir, the people living downstream have been warned to exercise caution and stay vigilant due to the increased water capacity released from Kalawewa.
The Engineer in charge has also informed the people to be careful while using the Kalawewa.
Meanwhile, traffic had been obstructed due to the sinking of the bridge over the Ulhitiya Oya on the Hobariya, Rathkinda main road due to the opening of the sluice gates of the Ulhitiya-Rathkinda Reservoir.
In the meantime, the Department of Meteorology has requested the fishing and marine community to be careful as thunderstorms may occur in the offshore sea areas from Colombo to Trincomalee via Galle, Hambantota and Batticaloa where the wind speed may increase to 60-70 km per hour.
Meanwhile, the 35th Mile Post area of the Polonnaruwa Somawathiya Road has been reportedly flooded due to the heavy rain falling in the Polonnaruwa district.
