Heavy showers above 50mm expected in several areas today

The Department of Meteorology says the atmospheric conditions are getting favorable for afternoon thundershowers in most parts of Sri Lanka from 01st October. 

As such, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the Uva, Eastern and Central provinces and in Polonnaruwa and Mullaittivu districts after 1.00 pm today (30), with fairly heavy falls above 50 mm likely at some places in the above areas.

A few showers may occur in the coastal areas of the Western Province and the Galle and Matara districts during the morning.

Misty conditions can be expected at some places in Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces in the morning.

The public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. 

Meanwhile, showers will occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mullaittivu to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa during the evening or night.

Winds will be South-westerly. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. Wind speed can increase up to 45 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar will be fairly rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. (Newswire)
