HFC, Kurunegala win Netball triple titles at National Sports Games
Holy Family Convent (HFC) Kurunegala once again came to the highlight when they clinched all three champion titles under 16,18 and under 20 at the National Sports Games held at Wennappuwa under the guidance of their former head coach Amalka Gunatilleka and trainer Ananda Wannitilleka.
The Familians excelled at all three age categories to enter the finals while three teams once again got the services of former school head coach Amalka Gunatilleka who is the present National junior Netball coach and her husband former National Volleyball skipper Ananda Wannitilleka who is the trainer of the team.
HFC Kurunegala Netball players managed to win only under 19 title at the recently concluded Milo Schools Netball championship in Polonnaruwa without the services of Amalka and Ananda Wannitilleka. In fact from last April Amalka Gunatilleka who was the head coach of HFC Kurunegala for the last decade to win all Netball Championships but she was transferred to Janadipathi College Kurunegala and new coach Thejani was attached to the school Netball training as Physical education teacher. However players and their parents demanded to get the services of coach Amalka Gunatilleka and Trainer Ananda Wannitilleka once again.
As a result for the National Schools Games Netball HFC players got training under Amalka Gunatilleka and Ananda Wannitilleka at a separate grounds at Udawalpola and their services were highly success to win all three age categories at National Sports Games Netball tournament at Albert F.Piris Stadium at Wennappuwa.
HFC Kurunegala beat Mahamaya Balika Kandy 19/16 at under 16 final while under 18 final HFC Kurunegala beat HFC Kalutara 41/29.
The under 20 final HFC Kurunegala beat Musaeus Colombo 32-22 at National Schools Games. HFC Kurunegala won all age group championships over the last ten years to dominate school Netball arena.
