High demand for Palmyrah toddy in foreign markets

In the year 2023, the Palmyrah Development Board has been able to earn an amount of US$ 102,422 from the export of Palmyrah toddy produced in Sri Lanka.

A progress review meeting of the institutions under the Plantation Industries Ministry was held last Friday under the patronage of Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera and these facts were revealed.

An amount of Rs.32.2 million has been earned by exporting Palmyrah toddy and the highest demand for Palmyrah toddy has been received from Canada and France. Apart from this, the Palmyrah Development Board points out that orders have been received for Palmyrah toddy in this country from many other countries.

The Dubai market has also received high demand for Palmyrah toddy exported under the trademark of Sri Lanka Palmyrah.

The Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister adviced Ministry Secretary Janaka Dharmakeerthi to start a promotion programme to popularize Palmyrah-related products in the foreign market as another agricultural project that can further expand this industry and provide the country with foreign exchange.

Meanwhile, it has been possible to earn a high income in the year 2023 from the export of other products related to Palmyrah.

Among them, they have managed to earn Rs. 3 million from the export of Palmyrah pulp, Rs. 2.9 million from the export of Odial flour, Rs. 8 lakhs from the export of Pulukodial flour, Rs. 2.6 million from the sale of Palm sugar candy and Rs. 2.6 million from the export of Palmyrah jaggery.
