Five-star hotel chefs to train hospital chefs
Pilot project at Apeksha Hospital
Patients to be served at bedside
Hygiene of paramount importance
The Health Ministry and the Sri Lanka Medical Nutrition Association (SLMNA) have decided to improve the quality and presentation of the food provided to in-patients in government hospitals.
SLMNA President, Nutritionist Dr. Nalinda Herath said that under this programme, the meals given to the inpatients will be packed in a tray with rice and curries arranged separately and the tray will be covered with a transparent wrapper and the food will be delivered to the patient’s bedside. He said that the pilot project of this programme will be started in July at Maharagama Apeksha Hospital, and then steps will be taken to implement it in all government hospitals across the country.
He also said that the chefs of five star hotels will provide special training to chefs who prepare food in hospitals.
“They will be also given a special uniform and food hygiene will be maintained at very high levels,” he added.
He also said the hospital employees delivering food will be given a special uniform and meals will be delivered to patient’s bedside instead of the prevailing system where patients have to come to the trolleys delivering food to take them.
