Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando instructed ministry officials to build a vehicle park under the flyover to be built from the Malay Street to the Salve Island Railway Station.
Instructions were given by the Minister during his inspection tour on Saturday to observe the progress of two flyovers at the Justice Akbar Mawatha and Uttarananda Mawatha as a solution to eliminate heavy traffic congestion in Colombo.
The flyover at the Justice Akbar Mawatha is to be constructed at a height of 5.3 meters from the Malay Street to the Slave Island Railway Station.
The area coming under the flyover could be converted into a vehicle park, the minister observed. Besides the roads of the vehicle park service lanes would be constructed for the movement of containers and heavy vehicles, Project Director Eng Nalinda Ratnayake explained to the Minister.
Minister Fernando also instructed to construct walking paths besides the flyover to be built at the Uttharananda Mawatha.
Construction work of the first phase of the double flyover planned at the Justice Akbar Road and the Uttarananda Mawatha to solve traffic congestion in Colombo city is to be completed by June this year.
The flyover being constructed at the Justice Akbar Mawatha is 207 metres in length and 8.4 metres in width while the flyover being constructed at the Uttarananda Mawatha is 396 metres in length and 10.4 metres in width. The connecting flyover will be 310 meters in length and 6.9 metres in width. The total cost of flyovers will be constructed for a cost of Rs. 5270 million, the Minister said.
Associated with the Minister were Secretary to the Ministry of Highways RWR Pemasiri, Chairman of the Road Development Authority Chaminda Athaluwage, Project Director Eng Nalinda Ratnayake and the senior officials of the contracting companies.
