Hiruni Bagya – pride of Viharamahadevi MV, Kandy

Nineteen-year-old Hiruni Bagya Samaratunge is a promising athlete having represented Sirimavo Bandaranayake MV, Hanguranketha and Viharamahadevi MV, Kandy with distinction.

Hiruni started her athletics career in 2016 by winning the long jump, 100m and 200m races at the Zonal Meet and was selected as the Best Athlete.

She continued her winning spree by securing the first place in the 100m and second place in the 200m races and the first place in the long jump at the Nuwara Eliya District Athletics Meet. In 2017 she went on to win the long jump and came second in the 100m and 200m races at the Zonal Meet and at the District Meet.

In 2018 she won the 100m and the 200m races and the long jump event at the District Meet.

In 2019 she continued her outstanding capabilities to win the 100m and the 200m races and long jump events and was named Best Athlete at the District Meet.

She secured third place in the long jump event at the Sir John Tarbat Athletics Meet and became champion athlete in the Under-20 age group at the Inter-House Sports Meet.

In 2021 she won the 200m event at the Sports Meet organised by the Youth Services clocking 27.25s.
