Hold PC Elections first, 13A can come later – Sajith
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa told Parliament yesterday that discussions can be held on the future of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution once the Provincial
Councils elections are held. We are ready to work in good faith for the country after carefully considering the proposals and ideas announced by the President regarding the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
He also questioned for whom the 13th Amendment is being implemented. It is important to first hold the Provincial Council and Local Government elections and implement this amendment with a mandate.
The Opposition Leader said this while presenting his views on President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s statement regarding the 13th Amendment in Parliament yesterday.
He requests the President to raise his voice for democracy. The voice you raised while in the Opposition cannot be changed now. Be principled. I also request the President to hold the election as soon as possible and avoid suppressing people by using state repression with state terror.
“The opposition is not always the opposition. We are thinking progressively about the proposals you presented today. Hold the provincial council election immediately. With that mandate, we can implement these amendments,”he said.
