House must pass Inland Revenue Amendment Bill soon – President

0 2

President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday appealed to Parliament to convene even on Saturday and pass the Inland Revenue Amendment Bill incorporated with Domestic Debt Restructuring (DDR) and get the approval from the Speaker on Sunday itself to complete the work on DDR.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe also said that he would request all members of Parliament to support the adoption of the Inland Revenue Amendment Bill.

The President also said that since the Court has analysed all the facts and given a determination regarding the Bill, the responsibility of approving it will be vested with this Assembly.

He said this while commenting on the Inland Revenue Amendment Bill in Parliament.

The Court has analysed all these facts and given a verdict. But the other parties have not presented their facts about this. Now it is the responsibility of this Assembly to approve this.

Before approving this, it should be referred to the Consultative Committee or Advisory Committee headed by me. I have not given this to the Advisory Committee. The MP Harsha De Silva made a request to provide facts about this.

I instructed the Secretary to look into it and provide that information. It is necessary to keep all this information confidential. Because if this information is received by an outside party, the country will be harmed. We need to finish the whole process by next week. I say this with responsibility.

“I took over a ruined country. When others said no to the Prime Ministership and ran away in fear, I took charge of this work and brought it forward”.

“This will not cause any damage to the EPF. We have agreed that a fixed interest of 9 percent will be given to employees for EPF. I did not decide on this 9 percent of fixed interest. It was decided by the former Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Government in this Assembly that day. So don’t accuse me in this regard. We must take this forward,”he said.

The President made these remarks when the chairman of the Committee on Public Finance (OPF) Harsha de Silva wanted the debate on the Inland Revenue Amendment Bill which provides provisions for charging a 30 percent tax from the EPF.
