The Office of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has issued a clarification regarding the economic advisors who served during his presidency, stating that Duminda Hulangamuwa was not among his key economic advisors.

In a statement issued yesterday (22), Wickremesinghe’s Office said Wickremesinghe had three key economic advisors during his tenure as President and Minister of Finance.

They were former Treasury Secretary Dr. R. H. Samaratunga, Treasury Secretary Mahinda Siriwardena and Central Bank Governor Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.

According to the statement, Wickremesinghe appointed the three advisors after assuming office during the 2022 economic crisis, despite claims at the time that the crisis could not be resolved.

The statement noted that the three officials represented Sri Lanka in discussions with key domestic and international institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

It further stated that the officials had also appeared before the Committee on Public Finance, chaired by Opposition MP Harsha de Silva.

Meanwhile, the former President’s Office clarified that Duminda Hulangamuwa did not serve as an economic advisor to Wickremesinghe.

Instead, Hulangamuwa was a member of an ad hoc group that contributed to the country’s economic growth strategy, representing the Chamber of Commerce, the statement said.

The clarification comes in response to recent remarks made by Opposition MP Harsha de Silva in Parliament this week, during which he claimed that Duminda Hulangamuwa, who had served as an economic advisor to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, was now advising President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
