Ibbankatuwa Megalithic burial ground needs renovation

The megalithic cemetery which has a history of over 3000 years, located in Ibbankatuwa a few kilometres away from the historic Dambulla temple on the A6 road needs urgent attention.

A cultural triangle project, excavation programme was launched under the guidance of the Central Cultural Fund and ruins have been unearthed.

They are being exhibited at the same place, to attract tourists to gain an income from them. Businessmen also have set up a few stalls at the entrance of this megalithic cemetery.

However when the Covid pandemic broke out, tourists stopped visiting the site. Although things have improved the centre lacks funds for proper maintenance, officials said.
